Building Contractor and Specialist Joinery Manufacturer

Our business was established in 1948 by Frank Douglas Hall (Nobby) who served his apprenticeship as a boat builder at Looe, Cornwall, and later as a joiner at Callington. He began work on his own with one employee, first working on farms erecting Dutch barns and general repair work. His son, Roger, began his apprenticeship in Carpentry and Joinery with the company in 1963 and went on to specialise in staircase work. Five years later he formed a partnership with his father and they employed 8 people. It was Roger’s intention to raise the profile of the company and to concentrate on purpose-made joinery, whilst still being able to compete on the open market for the more usual standard joinery in either softwood or hardwood.

An expansion programme commenced in 1973 with the purchase of an adjacent redundant building and a further purchase of a redundant chapel next door in 1984. Avril and Roger, having worked together in the business since 1971, formed a new partnership following his father’s retirement and in 1985 a new workshop was designed and built. Finished in the following year and equipped with advanced machinery, the company was now able to manufacture standard and purpose-made, architecturally designed doors and windows; staircases; conservatories; bespoke furniture; moulding and much more.

Our traditional values and workmanship, reinforced in our in-house training, was echoed by the Rural Development Council when they said our attitude to industry paid off and was making a major contribution to the rural economy. Our expansion culminated in a Ministerial visit in October, 1990.

Today we employ 35 staff and have taken on several apprentices over the years, many of whom have stayed on to take permanent positions in the business. Four of our most recently retired staff had served a combined 109 years with the company. Our most senior bench joiner started as a school leaver in July 1965.

Our turnover grew to over £2m in 2008 and we are keenly aware of the need to be competitive in this time of economic difficulty. Whilst both Roger and Avril still take a high profile role in the business the 3rd generation of Hall’s, Esther and Mark, are now also taking lead roles as the business moves forward.

We offer a manufacturing service on all types of joinery for all applications. A large proportion of our contracts have always been by way of other local builders who require the expertise of our design and manufacturing team.

Over the years our main contracts for building works have been complete refurbishments; new-build; restoration work and barn conversions. Much of our work has been undertaken as private contracts from recommendations, but a large source of work has been Cornwall Council(former Caradon District Council) involving grant works for the renovation of buildings and joinery for listed buildings and conservation areas. Over the last twenty years we have successfully tendered for work with Cornwall County Council and remain on their list of approved contractors. We are currently grateful for contracts placed with the Diocese of Cornwall for refurbishment projects which include Churches and domestic properties, and to St Austell Brewery for refurbishment of their public houses spread over Cornwall and West Devon.

Our company is pleased to sponsor and support many local charities; We have been sponsors of the local Sterts Arts Centre at Upton Cross for almost 30 years and received ABSA awards in the past. In September 1991 we accepted a “Challenge Anneka” project and completed the balustrading and decking to the then new footbridge over the River Camel – ON TIME!!

About The Team

Roger and Avril Hall are shareholding Directors of the company. Their children, Esther and Mark play key roles in the operation of FD Hall & Son with Esther taking overall responsibility for the financial performance across the whole business. Responsibility for site operations of building contracts rests with Mark whilst the operation of Joinery production lies with Esther. The company is also served by Mike Phipps who holds the position of Non-Executive Chairman, his role is to help steer business strategy for the benefit of all family members.

The team also comprises Paul Hegarty who is the Estimator for building works. He is the main contact point at the start of any Building works enquiry and he manages all such projects through their procurement stages up to and including the final account. Frank Powell is our principle estimator for joinery works; he assesses and prices all jobs from the point of enquiry including estimating the costs of fitting if the customer requires this service from FD Hall.

In “the office” are Ken and Carol who support all the operational staff and are usually the first people you will come into contact with if you phone us.

How We Operate

Although we have two sides to our business we pride ourselves in offering a seamless service whichever type of project you may have. Our joinery workshop produces high quality products and will also be involved in fitting this on site if it is part of a bigger building project that we are handling for you.

If ever you need to phone our office you will always be routed to an FD Hall member of staff who is best placed to take note of your query or requirements. Our order and processing systems are integrated so that we will always know the status of your project no matter where it was initiated.

We can handle enquiries and queries by e-mail and will ensure that you will always get a response within 24 hours if this is critical to you or if you have a problem.

FD Hall Charity Work

Through involvement with local churches, schools, clubs and groups we endeavour to support community projects by offering, when we can, materials, labour or secretarial support. For example the Sterts Theatre pictured here.

We have been successful as a family business for over 60 years to date – it is our intention that the values and workmanship that we believe are so important will keep us going for another 60 years.
